When it’s cold and grey outside, you’ll find that your fireplace – whether gas, electric, bioethanol or wood burning – becomes even more attractive. It offers both light and warmth, a stark contrast against the gloomy weather. It’s unsurprising, then, that it’s the perfect focal point for your home in the winter months.

Create a Cosy Nook

In the warmer months, many people prefer a more open plan layout for their living areas; the fire is kept at a distance where it can be appreciated more on a visual level. In winter, however, you’ll find the idea of curling up close to the flames much more attractive. By drawing a couple of comfy chairs close to the fire, you can create a cosy nook area where you can keep warm even on the coldest winter nights. Some stove designs – those with flat tops – also offer a perfect place to set your hot chocolate, cocoa or warm drink of choice to stop it going cold too quickly!

Decorate for Christmas

The festive season offers the ideal excuse for decorating your fireplace. If you have a traditional style fireplace, then it can be perfectly complemented with traditional Christmas colours. An evergreen garland hung with beautiful ornaments can also look fabulous.

For those who prefer a more modern design, you can create a fantastic winter wonderland effect with less traditional colours – silver, white and blue, for example – with tinsel, fairy lights and candlesticks.

Whichever decorative scheme you choose, however, it’s vital that you keep safety in mind. Most Christmas decorations are not designed to resist fire, so make sure that they’re kept well away from the fire itself, secured to the mantel so that they can’t accidentally fall in. If you plan on hanging your stockings from the mantel for Santa’s visit, then it’s a good idea to have some proper hooks for the purpose rather than relying on the strength of a drawing pin – unless you think you’ve been so naughty that it’s going to stay empty, of course!

Here at Real Flame, we offer the very best in fireplace design, from gas and electric fires to a great range of wood burning stoves in London, helping you to create the perfect fireplace for your home this winter and beyond.
