However, a warm house can sometimes not be enough – you want to create a space which is the embodiment of comfort, so that when you come home, you can forget all about the cold outside.

As suppliers of hole in the wall fires in London, we like to think we know one or two things about making a cosy room. The first thing to know is that you need to play on the senses, mainly sight and touch.

Furniture

Your furniture needs to call out to you, beckoning to be sunk into. Avoid silk and polyester makes, and anything else that looks shiny and feels cold – after all, you don’t want a horribly cold surprise when you sink into your chair.

Consider heavier curtains because they give a plush look and are great at excluding any unwanted draughts.

When it comes to arranging your furniture, you want it to be inviting, so avoid sharp angles. Instead, choose furniture with rounded shapes, and set it all in a rounded configuration. Pull your furniture forward around a focal point – preferably the fireplace.

Colours

Use colours such as golden yellow, terracotta, deep coral, scarlet, deep red and olive green to create a warm looking room. Colours best avoided or kept to a minimum include cool and pale yellows, light or bright pinks, pale blues, white and cream.

Brown is best added to a scheme in the form of warm, rich woods like walnut, cherry and oak. Avoid lighter shaded woods such as pine and maple.

A Fireplace

Of course we were going to mention a fireplace – it is the literal image of cosiness. Yes, a fireplace is the perfect winter focal point, helping your living room become the warm and cosy place it was meant to be!

At Real Flame, we offer an extensive range of stylish, elegant and attractive fireplaces.
