Wood Burning Stove – What Do I Need to Consider?

If you’re a first time stove buyer, there are a few things you may want to consider before searching out the perfect appliance for you. Here at Real Flame, we want our customers to be able to make well-informed decisions concerning their stove, as it is a big investment for your home.

We’ve put together a listing of what you may want to think about prior to actually finding a stove that will suit your needs.

What Your Stove Will Be Used For

The great thing about wood burners is that they come in many different forms. Want your living room to be heated? Great! Want your entire house to benefit? Fantastic! Even if your home doesn’t have a chimney built into it, you can still invest in a wood burner.

If you have a room in mind where you would like your wood burner installed, we suggest that you measure it to make sure there will be enough space. Your installer will check these measurements to make sure you have the correct size of stove for the heat output you’re looking for, but it’s always good to have an idea of how much room will be taken up by the burner, just in case any furniture needs to be re-arranged.

The Style

With so many styles of burners now available, the choice of aesthetic is pretty much endless. There’s the more traditional log burner, which could add a more rustic tone to your room. However, if contemporary is more your style, there are a wide range of styles that can be integrated into your room to keep it looking modern and new.

Book a Survey

Chances are all this measuring and calculating will be a bit much for you, so we recommend that you get a professional in to conduct a site survey on your property. The engineer will identify all the relevant aspects of a stove installation, such as a flue system, hearth and the ventilation of the room. This is when they’ll be able to tell you what size of stove would be suitable for you, and where the best place to install your stove would be.

Businessman Filling Form

They will also be able to tell you whether the area you live in is a smoke-controlled area or not, which may affect what stove you can have installed. Do make sure the installer is qualified and registered  to do the survey, though.

Adding Value to Your Property

Back in December of last year, This Is Money reported that owning a wood burner could add around 5% to your property value. With rising heating costs and energy bills, more and more homeowners are turning to solid fuel stoves to heat their homes more efficiently, especially in the winter when the heating is on almost constantly.

Money and house

Finally, the most important thing to consider…

Make Sure You Hire A Professional!

Sadly, not all people are genuine nowadays and we’ve all seen the nightmares of cowboy builders and insincere salespeople on TV. Making sure the right person is installing your stove is vital; this is a massive investment you’re making, after all, and you need to know your money isn’t being wasted on poor workmanship. The nature of owning any kind of appliance in your home brings potential life-threatening risks if done incorrectly, so why run the risk?
