How to Accessorise a Fireplace

Fireplaces are the best focal point in a home; they make a living room a warm and comfortable place to spend an evening. Or they add an extra special feeling to an outside area on a cold night. Some people would say you should let the fireplace speak for itself, that it is an old fashioned style to have multiple ornaments on the mantelpiece that will gather nothing but dust.

This is minimalism; a modern style that has taken over the design world in recent years. In this light, how do you accessorise your fireplace whilst still maintaining an uncluttered look?

Comfort

A space with a fireplace needs to be comfortable, especially in the winter season. Luxurious sofas, armchairs and fluffy blankets need to be on hand in order to truly enjoy the space in the lap of comfort. The fireplace is usually the centre of the room and so your furniture should face it in order to reap the benefits. Placing a television above the fireplace serves to merge the two main focal points of a living room; the entertainment and the warmth. This adds to the comfort of the room as you can relax and enjoy television on those dark nights that need a fire.

Ornamentation

Ornamentation the way that you may have known it may not be in, but that doesn’t mean you have to forego it altogether. Simple, elegant, displays on either side of your actual fire may be the answer for anyone wishing to make a statement. They are not likely to gather dust or clutter your mantelpiece. They are also highly attractive when used in harmony with a number of modern styles, appealing primarily to the minimalist school of design.

A Suitable Colour Palette

A warm fireplace deserves a warm colour palette to match, in order to create an atmosphere that reflects the warmth that a fireplace gives. Red is typical of this and makes for a stylish colour scheme for any space. This is also a great colour to help create a more intimate setting, as lighter colours can feel cold and make a space larger. Warmer colours help to make space feel smaller, so this is perfect for a large room that feels empty otherwise.
