Common Fireplace Problems and Solutions

A fireplace can make a great addition to any room as it provides a function at the same time as offering a utility. However, just as with any appliance, you may sometimes run into small problems, so we want to make sure you know what to do should you encounter any of these issues.

My Wood Burning Stove Won’t Stay Lit

Wood burning stoves can give you a fantastic rustic feel in a room, and the sound and smell of a real roaring fire is great. However, it can be frustrating if you can’t get the fire to stay lit, so what can you do?

Does the fire have what it needs to stay lit? Fire needs three things, oxygen, heat and fuel. Make sure that you have enough kindling that is completely dry and there is sufficient airflow. There could be a blockage in a vent which could be killing the fire. If this is the case, it’s a good idea to call out a professional to come and take a look. We offer and servicing and maintenance service, so make sure to contact us.

The Pilot Light has Gone Out on My Gas Fire

Your gas fire uses the pilot light as an ignition source, so if it goes out, it can’t light the fire. You should follow the manufacturer’s instructions to get the pilot light relit. Make sure the vent cap is secure as this could prevent it from happening again in the future. If you still can’t get the pilot light to stay lit, you will need to get in touch with one of our engineers as there could be a problem with the wiring.

My Wood Stove is Producing a Lot of Smoke

Nobody wants a cloud of smoke whenever they have their wood burner lit, and this is a sign that something isn’t quite right. It may be as simple as your firewood being damp, or it could be a little more complicated. Obstructions in the stove pipe or chimney can cause smoke as there is nowhere for it to escape. There could also be an issue with the door being damaged. If the wood you are burning is dry, it is a good idea to make a call to a professional such as the Real Flame engineers who can investigate the source of the problem and fix it.
